What Drives Bob Dylan?

Here he is, age 72, and still going strong. Not just a show here and there, but his list of shows go on and on, both here and around the world. But that is not really what I am asking. His passion must be tremendous. I've been reading some of the commentaries and attempts to understand the meaning in his songs and I think trying to pin a meaning down is like trying to pin Bob down, it's just not going to be done. I think his passion comes from his discovery within himself that he can put into songs (the music and the words) the emotions he is experiencing in his present. He finds new venues for that expression, whether it be changing his music style from the mainstream when it doesn't fit or expressing things in the songs that go beyond the accepted. I think he mastered the ability to apply "free association" to his songs. Maybe he himself didn't even know how to interpert into english words in a way to convey his internal emotions, he just used the best words that just seemed to flow out of his mind at the time. That is free association. Maybe that is why if you just look at his words of a song on a two deminsional page, you cannot possible understand what he was saying. You have to hear it along with the music and feel it. Because the songs do connect in a wonderful way to those who just listen and not try to define each detail. When we feel a little bit of what he was feeling, then we "get it", even though we also cannot put into words those same emotions when describing them to others who havent experienced it. I think that is his passion - a never ending outlet of connection to others.

I like what you are saying

I like what you are saying here: "Maybe that is why if you just look at his words of a song on a two dimensional page, you cannot possible understand what he was saying. You have to hear it along with the music and feel it. Because the songs do connect in a wonderful way to those who just listen and not try to define each detail."

When Kait and I met Bob one of the first things he said to us was that he's "never had a fan club." On the surface that seemed like a strange statement to say the least, since the guy's had hundreds if not thousands of websites etc dedicated to him and his work over the years -- some of whom I'm sure have referred to themselves as fan clubs -- and I'm sure he knows that!

But, the more I've thought about this since that meeting, the more I think I get what he was saying, and I believe his point is similar to what you are stating, above. Despite the myriad books written and other attempts to analyze and define his work (and, by extension, his life) he maybe felt a lack of people just listening and appreciating, without needing to insert themselves and make themselves seem smarter by criticizing him or claiming they know what he meant by a certain line or song.

So with what we do here, we try to be what he asked, a voice to spread appreciation of his amazing work and let true fans connect with his music and each other -- Bob's Fan Club, listening and loving and 'getting it' and cheering him on!

Yes, I think it is like when
Yes, I think it is like when someone is sharing their heart with you, they don't want you to "fix it" or analyze or criticize what they are saying. They just want you to listen and let in what they are feeling in the moment. To connect emotionally and share that moment with them. That is how someone shares the burden of life with someone else, by letting it sink in and affect you. I'm glad that is what this fan club is about. I want to share that with him. I am so grateful just for his life and how he has shared it with the world. I hope this fan club and those of us here are a real support to him. I just bought "Tempest" and am spending time just letting that in.

Wow, some of "Tempest" is
Wow, some of "Tempest" is hard to listen to, but I immeadiatly enjoyed the song "Tempest" and his tribute to John Lennon, "Roll on John". That one broke my heart. Some of the others were hard to comprehend, especially with me being a newby fan. Even some of the ones that were hard for me to take in, still drew me and I was compelled to listen over and over again, because Bob's voice is very comforting to me.. "Pay in Blood" was one of those. The ballad ones were neat, because I grew up on ballad songs, like Jimmy Wolford's "Vendetta", about the Hatfields and McCoy's in the area where I am from. Mostly though, it is so comforting to hear Bob's voice still going and touching others like myself, knowing its not too late for me to still be a fan. I love you Bob Dylan. You are like a family member who I did not get to know until now and really be able to appreciate your life and music. You touch my heart.

Favorite songs on the cd Tempest
On the CD "Tempest", the most intriguing songs to me are "Long and Wasted Years" - which is my favorite - and "Pay in Blood". "Long and Wasted Years" sets my mood to feeling sad with it's musical downbeat at the start of each line. The allegories and phrases like "two trains running side by side, forty miles wide" really hits home. I've been there, living in the same house with someone, but feeling like we are separated by 40 miles. "Pay in Blood" is one of those songs that my mind says, "that's too hard of a song, you are not suppose to like it", but for some reason I want to play it over and over again. I cannot put my finger on why I like to listen to it so much. I guess there is so much to discover about my own self and being. Anyway, I am glad I bought the CD and I never cease to be impressed by Bob.

Tempest
I think the song Tempest is a true work of art, a masterpiece, when that album first came out I couldn't stop listening to that song! I think it's because of the way Bob uses it to look at the human condition and human nature. It's just all these people and their different reactions to impending death. What a tough topic and he describes it all in a way that is so human and at the same time so profound!

I've seen your avatar all this time and it finally dawned on me what you were wearing - Titanic! - duh. Boy, I'm slow. Oh, I just loved how he tied it into the James Cameron movie with Leo. The music he used was just perfect as well as the imagery of the watchman dreaming.

Haha oh yeah! That's from Halloween, or actually the night before, at the Bob show here in Colorado! Myself, Kait (Flowers of Indulgence) and Mr. Jinx all dressed as Titanic passengers and went like that to the show -- we had front row tickets, too, and Bob saw us there when he first came out and laughed and gave us a nod :)  You can see a few more pics and read about it in my road journal on this site, here's a link: http://www.thebobdylanfanclub.com/content/fall-2012-carolines-headin-another-joint-journal

A new favorite song! "Things Have Changed"
I picked up a cd that has a song from Bob in 2000. "Things Have Changed". I love it! Nothing too hard or strong, just a fun song to listen to and very (my) age relevant. I am so glad I am on the discovery trail. I like Bob's new music now even more that the earlier ones. I can't explain it, I just do. "People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care, but things have changed"

Some things are too hot to touch......
"Some things are too hot to touch, the human mind can only stand so much". Bob is still the same as he was in the beginning.  Still being a Nathan, one who sees things as they are and calls things as they are, regardless.  And as is so often the case, when the guilty cross the line, the innocent are the ones who usually have to Pay.
Thank you for all you do, Bob.

Duquesne Whistle
Duquesne Whistle is such a lovely mellow song. I'm really starting to enjoy listening to it just to relax. In "Chronicles" it's amazing what Bob had to go through, with what people wanted him to be and do. I'm glad he was able to break away and be able to give his family what they needed. The book really jumps around and follows several different time lines as you read along. I wonder if there is a special meaning why he did it that way. My impression of Bob is that he is just a very quiet, sensitive and deep thinker. As I learn more and more, I seem to realize how much I connect with his songs and that even though I was not a fan for all these years, why his early songs still drew me, in spite of my mis-education about Bob and who he was. I just love it that I connect with his musical artistry so much now! I hope he does another tour in my area, I will definatly be in the front next time!

I believe in you
Every time I get a new (for me) album of Bob Dylan and take the time to listen, I walk away staggared. Bob puts so much of his heart and soul into every song he sings. I just bought "A Slow Train Coming" and I can just feel his heart when he sings the songs like "I Believe in you". So much of it relates to his whole life.

"They ask me how I feel
And if my love is real
And how I know I'll make it through
And they, they look at me and frown
They'd like to drive me from this town
They don't want me around
'Cause I believe in you. They show me to the door
They say don't come back no more
'Cause I don't be like they'd like me to
And I, I walk out on my own
A thousand miles from home
But I don't feel alone
'Cause I believe in you." Wow! Isn't this how he has been treated so often in his life? Believing in God, believing in himself, it doesn't matter. He pressed on and has become such a blessing to all of us, to me, because he believed.

Written in my soul
Almost every thing he writes and sings grips my heart and he express wonderfully how I feel about his music by this refrain from "Tangled up in Blue". "Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century.
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin' coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you

Like a pearl
Like the formation of a pearl, Bob's music is formed around something deep within that causes hurt or other strong emotion. Layer upon layer and eventually a beautiful pearl is produced. The hurt doesn't even have to be his own, he has such empathy for others that he takes that pain and makes a pearl for them, as well, because he can relate so much.
Going all the way back to "Blowin' in the Wind", an example of the mile long string of pearls he has created.

Like a Christmas present
Bob Dylan's music, to me, is like unopened Christmas presents that I had just tossed into some back closet every year for the past 50 years. It's sad that for all this time I never got to enjoy and appreciate each and every one, but it's wonderful now that, here I am tearing open each one as fast as I can and seeing everything just as fresh as it was when it was made! :-)

That is amazingly awesome and so glad you are on this journey! I am jealous in a way, because nothing is like that initial discovery :) But the wonderful thing about Bob's music is there are so many layers that you CAN keep discovering and rediscovering it over the years - and every so often they do release stuff that is new even to long term fans, like last week's Another Self Portrait!

When He Returns
"When He Returns" is as lovely a gospel song as I have ever heard. It's special in that it is one of those that I want to be the last song I hear as I go to sleep after a long hard loud stressful day. When all feels like your ship is going under and everything is going wrong, being reminded that one day all will be made right, is a comfort that first puts tears in my eyes and then helps clear them. I'm a believer and I have no doubt that when all is said and done, Bob is too. His music from his heart is such a comfort to me.

His voice
On another forum someone mentioned something about his voice and I responded: "The thing about Dylan's music, is that his voice (no matter how unpolished people think it is) is as much a part of the interpertation as the words. You have to hear it from him and as I keep listening, I feel it and really start to "get it" far more than I did from the others who covered his songs.

Many say he should retire because of his voice, but he uses his voice, especially now, as the means of framing the songs he now writes. He has the genius of taking exactly who he is and as he is in the present, to express what he wants to say. I believe you are absolutely right - he is the highest mountain in the background of musical poetry and has been there so long, that most don't even think about or pay attention. I am so glad, I finally looked up and saw his beauty while he is still here."

Makes you think
One of the main things I love about Bob's songs, is that many of them make you think or reexamine things. His music was never solely to feel good or just entertain. There is depth to his music. I still hear comments being very negative about his voice, but they will never understand that through his voice he transmits his heart and soul.

When the Deal Goes Down
I guess this is sort of my Bob Dylan journal, now. In the "Modern Times" cd, the song "When the Deal Goes Down" really made me feel sad. My Angel passed away a couple years ago, 3 years after she had a brain aneurysm. She was my best friend, life guide, my mentor, my angel. She helped me through the hardest times of my life and I walked her through the last 3 years of her life, after her aneurysm. I was there with her when "the deal went down" and this song really brings back the memories. Thank you.

WORKINGMANS BLUES 2
Another song that I can feel Bob's heart so much through. "In you, my friend, I find no blame
Wanna look in my eyes, please do
No one can ever claim
That I took up arms against you" I feel like he is telling me that no matter what my misconceptions of him were in the past, he has never been against anyone that is a common working person like me and my family and friends. In another song he mentions that he wears dark glasses to cover his inner feelings that he cant hide through his eyes. To us common people, however, he is willing to take those glasses off so we can see deeply in his eyes his caring and that he is just one of us.

An unbelivable diamond mine
I was wrong! Bob's work is not like just a Christmas present, it's an unbelievable diamond mine, that whenever I passed by it and saw something gleaming like a gem, I was told that there was really nothing of value, inside. Oh, how I was wrong.

Poetry on a page is 2 dimensional, set it to music and it's 3 dimensional. Bob carries poetry and music far beyond that, to more than I ever imagined, far beyond the horizon.

Maggie's Farm
In the song "Maggie's Farm" he says the line: "Well, I try my best to be just like I am,
But everybody wants you to be just like them
." I kind of think the song "I Believe in You" has a special tie to "Maggie's Farm" with the line: "'Cause I don't be like they'd like me to". In both songs he is moving on because of the way he was treated for who he was. No matter how lonely or far away from home he was. Hearing the lines to both of these songs, I feel like I can relate so much in my own life. I feel both a sense of sadness of not belonging and of the need to "keep on moving on".

It's Alright, Ma, but It Ain't Me, Babe!
A common theme throughout Bob's songs, I think, one that pops up throughout the years. "It is not he or she or them or it that you belong to!" I also think of It Ain't Me, Babe, in this vein of songs. Although on one level it can be taken as a man addressing his lover, I've always thought of it as bigger than that and as Bob addressing his detractors or the masses who always want him to be a certain way when maybe he wants to do something else! Property of Jesus also has these elements. And lots of others, I'm sure! I have seen a few live performances of I Believe in You that sent chills up my spine and made my hair stand on end, they were so emotional and raw.

I never thought of the song "It ain't Me Babe" in the light of what you were saying, but you are right. Maybe, because I havn't heard Bob sing it yet. Your point is a very good one. Johnny Cash
My favorite performer I claimed while growing up in West Virginia, was Johnny Cash. I have read recently how Johnny Cash had written an open letter to Bob Dylan defending Bob in the early years and that Bob had always respected him for doing that. I had a bug to rewatch the movie "I Walk the Line", with Joaquin Phoenix, and pay attention to see if there were any references to Bob Dylan. I had not remembered any at all, from seeing it before. Well, sure enough the movie does talk about that letter, but the scene was kind of surrounded by other happenings and it was easy to miss. And actually the next song after that scene in the movie is a Dylan song, "It ain't me, babe". Later in the movie, an audio backdrop is Bob Dylan singing a song. Also the movie has a scene where Johnny Cash's producer wants him to change his style because Dylan, the Byrds and the Beatles have gone electric. So, that was so neat to see that there was a connection in the movie between Bob and Johnny.

When the Deal goes Down
"We learn to live and then we forgive" The depths of this line strikes the core of my being.  The second line of the song says "Where wisdom grows up in strife". To me this all resonates in learning from life's experience. We gain wisdom from going through all the strife we experience and in that learning "We learn to live..." and as we begin to realize that we all "wear the same thorny crown", we learn to forgive ourselves and go on to be able forgive others. I cannot put into words the connection I feel in my soul, that Bob touches with this song.

You could see the bewildement in Steve Segeer at the crowd. But, Bob needed to cut his ties with them to keep his music freedom growing.   I just keep feeling the excitement as I am tearing open more and more Bob Dylan Christmas presents!

Another Self Portrait
One of the first things I notice on this album is the front pic drawing. In this one, the image of Bob is far more clear and in focus than in "Self Portrait". He views himself now, far  closer to reality, than seeing himself in such abstract before. One thing I have noticed in Chronicles, is how often in his past he doubted himself and was feeling insecure about his work, especially after he injured his hand. He kept looking at other singers as better than himself and felt suprised when they would use his songs. There were definatly some low points in his life of self doubt. He is just like the rest of us and how often we see ourselves in much less of a light than others see us. I just want to shout out to him how that he is the best and has always been so, no matter how much he doubted himself!

Masters of War
I had never listened to this song before, although I vaguely do remember hearing the title. The line about the worse fear the threat of nuclear war brought, was the fear of bringing children into the world, was dead on. I remember my parents talking about that, way back then. Very scary times, although todays times are not any better. We have just learned to live with that fear. I live near Norfolk, Va and go past the largest naval facilities in the world and I cant help thinking about this area is probably the largest target in the world, too.

I enjoyed listening to this song, then "Like a Rolling Stone" and then "Pay in Blood" all in a row and I can just feel the same spirit Bob has when singing these songs.

SHELTER FROM THE STORM
I am so excited! I went back to the music store where I bought "Another Self Portrait" and I didn't have much cash with me so I bought a cd that I had passed up before. It was only 5$ and it didn't seem to be very exciting. It is the "Hard Rain" cd, a live concert in '76. I figured I would get it just to see if there were any gems in it. Well, I put it into my car's player and listened to the first few songs and then I got to "Shelter From the Storm". I liked the melody within the rock beat and I was fairly intrigued by the lyrics until I heard the line "upon a hilltop village, they gambled for my cloths" - OMG - is this another song of faith? Yes! I played it over and over again and yes, I couldn't believe all the spiritual references. Bob has such a deep reservoir of spirituality.  "Come in," she said, "I'll give you, shelter from the storm". "She" is Grace! At least that is what my heart says. I don't like anyone to say things for Bob or say what he hasn't said, but I do feel the heart connection of what I believe the spirit of the song is. Another invaluable, precious gem I have discovered in his artistry!  Oh, how I wish I could hear this one live and be there in the front when he sings it!!!! I was dancing away in my bedroom!

Never grow tired
I just never grow tired of listening to Bob's music. It is always so fasinating. His range has gone from folk, to rock, to country, to punk, to gospel, to blues, ballads and all mixes in between, traditional and even Christmas songs. I'm trying to figure out why I feel such a strong connection to his music. I love the deeper, more important things in life which his music train plows right through the middle of. It seems he lives out his life through his music or at least the part of his inner being that he shares with us, his fans. The emotions he shares with us through his music is real. All of it comes from his heart. He is just that way. I don't think any of it is "canned", just for show. That's not how it feels to me.  I try to share this with others and very few understand. I don't know why. I will always be a fan. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Bob. A forever fan.

I am so in love with the song "Shelter from the Storm". This song expresses the entire essence of my life. I listen to it over and over and I cry. I read the lyrics and I cry. Not tears of sadness, but tears of comfort, knowing that someone else knows exactly how I feel. From living as "a creature void of form", to "Not a word was spoke between us.....", to "I was burned out from exhaustion.......blown out on the trail", to "She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns". Thank you so much for sharing your heart, Bob. I love you. "And every one of them words rang true

What drives Bob Dylan?
To answer my own question, Bob's love for his family, his friends and all his loved ones, is why he keeps going. I believe it's also for his fans, especially for the ones who have stuck with him, thick or thin, for years and decades. On a different subject, actually back to my favorite 'Shelter from the storm", when I think of his latest album "Tempest", I think "Shelter..." is still the answer, no matter if it's a "Hard Rain" or a "Tempest". Bob, I love you and pray for you every day.

Gotta Serve Sombody
I just received "Gotta Serve Somebody - Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan" (2002). It is so neat to hear others sing his songs with the same passion Bob does. The neatest thing, however, was to hear Bob's conversation with his "momma" (his wife? - I would love to know who she is!) and one of the singers. It was in the context of the last song, but it still gives some insight to Bob at his home.

"I'm Pressing On"
On the Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan cd, some of his songs sung by choirs, such as "Pressing On" and "Solid Rock" are so beautiful! They sound like songs I have heard all my life, except that other than on this cd, I have never heard them before. It's just his music is timeless. I still keep trying to introduce and reintroduce Bob's music to others and very few seem to get it, either his older music or his current music. I wish they could feel the depth of his songs and have them strike the chords of their hearts, like he has mine. Maybe, like me, it just takes time.

Gospel songs of Bob Dylan cd
Listening to "Gotta Serve Somebody" cd, it is so fitting for black American Gospel singers take up Bob's music. His connection with the black American blues and
Gospel singers runs deep. They, more than most, know the deep spiritual and life meanings to his music. They have lived it.

Pressing On
Oh, I love this song of inspiration! The line "Nothin' can hold you down, nothin' that you lack" strikes such a deep chord! How simple, but precious, the meaning in that line!
